Number of dental practices in Schleswig-Holstein decreases - Schleswig-Holstein's dental workforce shifts but maintains stable care coverage

Dental care in Schleswig-Holstein remains strong despite some shifts in workforce numbers. While the region still holds a solid position, recent trends show a slight decline in self-employed dentists and orthodontists. At the same time, the number of employed dentists has grown over the past year, keeping overall coverage relatively stable.

Over the past decade, enrolment in dental medicine programmes has stayed consistent. This steady flow of new graduates has helped maintain dental services across the region. However, a shortage of qualified dental assistants has put pressure on practices.

The number of self-employed dentists and orthodontists has dipped slightly, though no area in Schleswig-Holstein currently risks undersupply. Meanwhile, the rise in employed dentists has balanced out some of the workforce changes. Still, retirements in the coming years are expected to reduce the total number of dentists.

To address these challenges, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists in Schleswig-Holstein is calling for better working conditions. Their goal is to ensure the region keeps its strong dental care standards despite the changing landscape.

Schleswig-Holstein's dental care system remains stable for now, but future retirements could shrink the workforce. The region's coverage rate has seen a minor drop but stays within a secure range. Efforts to improve conditions for dental staff aim to prevent any future gaps in care.
