Singapore's Bold Campaign Cuts Salt to Revive Taste and Health
A new campaign in Singapore is urging residents to cut back on salt to improve their health. Called Salt Buries True Flavours, the initiative highlights how excessive sodium dulls taste buds and raises serious health risks. Organisers claim that just three weeks of reduced intake can help people rediscover natural flavours.
Singaporeans currently consume almost twice the World Health Organization's recommended daily sodium limit. This overconsumption is linked to hypertension, which affects one in three residents. Other risks include headaches, thirst, and water retention.
The Health Promotion Board has launched a 3-week guide to help people manage their sodium intake at home and while eating out. The campaign also features a retro-style film offering practical tips and debunking common myths about salt.
From 26 February to 25 March 2026, an interactive art exhibition called The Gallery of Hidden Salt will run at Orchard MRT linkway. Visitors can explore visual displays showing the hidden sodium in everyday meals. Scientists note that taste receptor cells regenerate every 10–14 days, meaning a short break from excess salt could help reset dulled taste buds.
The campaign encourages small, mindful changes to reduce sodium without sacrificing the enjoyment of local cuisine.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of high salt intake while preserving Singapore's food culture. By making gradual adjustments, residents may lower their health risks and rediscover the true flavours of their meals. The campaign's tools and events will run through March 2026.
