A new project called 'Snack Heroes: Healthy Recipes, Big Impact' has launched at Schwalmtal School. The initiative aims to teach teenagers about nutrition, sustainability, and healthy living. It is part of the Healthy Municipality Network, a prevention programme running until 2027.

The project began in September 2025 and will run for 13 weeks. Students are exploring topics like balanced diets, mental well-being, and physical activity. They have already prepared healthy snacks for their school and created a cookbook featuring their recipes.

One standout success was their apple crumble, which proved popular with staff and classmates. The programme also includes lessons on sustainable food practices, supported by visits from local experts. Representatives from Viersen District’s Waste Management Authority and a food-sharing organisation recently led workshops on reducing food waste. Health insurers AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse are backing the initiative until April 2027. The goal is to make health-conscious habits a permanent part of school life.

The 'Snack Heroes' project is designed to improve health literacy among young people. By combining practical cooking with lessons on sustainability, it encourages long-term lifestyle changes. The programme’s success at Schwalmtal School may lead to wider adoption across the district.
