Stada's Snup Allerg Nasal Spray Launches for Over-the-Counter Allergy Relief

Stada will release Snup Allerg, a non-prescription nasal spray for allergy relief, on 1 November 2023. The product combines azelastine and fluticasone to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children over six. Regulators initially had concerns about its suitability for over-the-counter use before approving it earlier this year. The spray delivers 137 µg of azelastine hydrochloride and 50 µg of fluticasone propionate per dose. Azelastine, a second-generation antihistamine, blocks H1 receptors to ease allergy symptoms. Fluticasone, a potent synthetic corticosteroid, reduces inflammation more effectively than dexamethasone.

Before use, patients must shake the bottle vigorously for five seconds, then tilt it upward and downward. The recommended dose is one spray in each nostril twice daily—morning and evening. The Expert Committee on Prescription Requirements (SAV) originally questioned whether patients could self-diagnose severe allergic rhinitis accurately. Despite these doubts, the combination gained OTC approval on the third attempt. The German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) had previously raised similar concerns before the final decision.

Snup Allerg will be available without a prescription from 1 November. The fixed-dose spray offers a dual-action treatment for hay fever and similar allergies. Patients should follow the instructions carefully to ensure proper use and effectiveness.
