Study Reveals the Perfect Sleep Duration to Slow Aging

A new study has uncovered how sleep duration affects the body’s aging process. Researchers analysed data from the UK Biobank to determine the ideal nightly rest for slowing biological wear and tear. Their findings highlight the risks of both insufficient and excessive sleep. The study, published in Nature, examined the connection between sleep habits and biological aging. Scientists tracked participants’ health over time, focusing on how different sleep lengths influenced organs and immune function.

For men, the slowest aging occurred with 6.4 to 7.7 hours of sleep per night. Women benefited most from 6.5 to 7.8 hours. Deviating from these ranges—whether sleeping too little or too much—accelerated the body’s decline.

Chronic sleep deprivation was found to damage the immune system, skin, lungs, and liver. Meanwhile, consistently needing over nine hours to feel rested may indicate hidden health problems. The research confirms that both extremes disrupt the body’s natural repair processes. The study provides clear sleep guidelines for reducing biological aging. Men and women should aim for roughly 6.5 to 7.8 hours nightly to protect long-term health. Straying from this range, researchers warn, could speed up the body’s deterioration.
