Swiss Town Recycles 1.5 Million PET Bottles, Saving Oil and Cutting Emissions
The Swiss town of Sarnen has recycled a massive 40,000 kilograms of PET drink bottles. This effort translates to roughly 1.5 million individual bottles kept out of landfills. The initiative also brings significant environmental benefits beyond waste reduction.
The recycling drive in Sarnen has made a measurable impact on energy and emissions. By processing these bottles, the town has saved around 30,000 litres of crude oil. At the same time, the effort cuts greenhouse gas emissions by about 100,000 kilograms.
Sarnen's achievement reflects a broader trend across Switzerland. Since 2023, PET-Recycling Schweiz has awarded official certification to 1,248 municipalities and cities. These certifications recognize their commitment to PET recycling, with the latest figures confirmed as of 2026.
The results in Sarnen show how local recycling programs can deliver concrete environmental gains. The town's work conserves resources, lowers emissions, and aligns with Switzerland's growing network of certified recycling communities. The numbers also highlight the potential for similar efforts in other regions.
