Symbiosis Coalition launches second RFP to scale carbon removal and mangrove projects
The Symbiosis Coalition has launched a second request for proposals (RFP) to boost high-quality carbon removal projects. This follows its first RFP in December 2024, which has already selected two initiatives. The new call expands support to include mangrove restoration for the first time. The Coalition seeks projects that meet strict criteria. They must be in countries below the US State Department's risk level 4, use approved standards, and commit at least 100,000 tonnes over 10 years for Symbiosis contracts. Developers with experience, strong funding, and the ability to deliver over 500,000 tonnes in the same period will receive priority.
The latest RFP also introduces a pilot programme for mangrove projects, marking Symbiosis's first step into blue carbon initiatives. Up to 1 million tonnes of credits from these projects could be pre-purchased. All selected schemes must align with the Coalition's Quality Criteria and be ready for commercial offtake agreements.
Symbiosis has already secured an advance market commitment of over 20 million tonnes for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects by 2030. Its members include major companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce. The group aims to support best-in-class restoration efforts, backed by the latest scientific standards. The second RFP builds on Symbiosis's goal to scale high-integrity carbon removals. Successful projects will contribute to its 2030 target while expanding into new areas like mangrove conservation. Developers meeting the requirements can now submit proposals for evaluation.
