Terminally ill inmate dies in custody after months of medical struggles

A 70-year-old inmate, Abdur Rahman Mia, has died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). He passed away at 11:30am on Saturday after battling severe health complications. Chattogram Central Jail authorities confirmed the death shortly afterwards.

Abdur Rahman Mia, a resident of Uttar Agrabad in Chattogram's Double Mooring area, was arrested in November 2025. He was taken into custody under a case filed by Kotwali police and sent to Chattogram Central Jail on November 17.

His health had been deteriorating for months. He suffered from lung cancer that had spread to his brain, along with high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). On December 24, 2025, he was transferred to CMCH for advanced treatment. After nearly a month of care, he returned to the jail on January 18, 2026.

However, his condition worsened again. Mia was readmitted to CMCH on January 26, where he remained until his death. The official cause was listed as carcinoma of the lung with brain metastasis, alongside his other long-term illnesses.

The death was confirmed by Chattogram Central Jail superintendent Syed Shah Sharif. Mia had been in custody for just over two months before his passing. No further details have been released regarding medical care standards or previous inmate deaths at the facility.
