Thai Medical Student Wins Gold at International Emergency Medicine Contest
A medical student from Thammasat University has claimed the top prize at a major international emergency medicine competition. Chawit Wanamongkol won gold in the individual category at the 10th KKU ICEM 2026, held at Khon Kaen University. The event brought together 12 teams from leading medical schools across Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines.
The competition tested skills in emergency care through three rounds: Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final. The Final round used simulation-based scenarios with mannequins, focusing on Adult and Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS/PALS 2025 guidelines) and common emergencies. Wanamongkol's team, which included sixth-year students Pheem Phongsukwechakul and Supapitch Subenja, as well as fifth-year student Thorntarathip Singthong, secured the second runner-up position in the team category.
Wanamongkol described the qualities of a strong emergency physician as calmness, speed, and meticulous attention to detail. He praised the role of emergency doctors in stabilising patients, calling them unsung heroes. Beyond the competition, he valued the chance to meet international students, gaining insights into different cultures, medical systems, and ways of life. Teamwork played a key part in his experience. Wanamongkol stressed that no physician can treat a patient alone, highlighting the need for collaboration in medicine.
The 10th KKU ICEM 2026 showcased the skills of future emergency medicine professionals from across Asia. Thammasat University's team returned with both an individual gold medal and a team award. The event reinforced the importance of quick thinking, teamwork, and cultural exchange in medical training.
