Therapist Warns Sedentary Lifestyle Is a Silent Health Threat

A leading therapist has warned about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, calling it one of the worst habits for long-term health. Svetlana Burnatskaya, from Moscow’s Meditsina Clinic, also shared practical advice on sleep, diet, and stress management to improve wellbeing. Burnatskaya highlighted that prolonged sitting slows metabolism, weakens circulation, and raises the risk of serious conditions. These include hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and even depression. To counter this, she recommends taking short, active breaks every 40 to 60 minutes.

Sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining health, according to the specialist. Adults should aim for 7 to 9 hours each night, with a regular bedtime routine and no bright screens before sleep. She also stressed the need to manage chronic stress, avoid self-medication, and prioritise personal hygiene. For diet, Burnatskaya advises cutting back on sugary and overly salty processed foods. Instead, she encourages eating more vegetables and whole foods. Staying hydrated and seeking professional medical advice when needed were also key points in her guidance. Her comments align with broader health discussions in Russia. Health Minister Mikhail Murashko recently noted that a balanced lifestyle directly contributes to a longer, more active life. Meanwhile, a former Miss North titleholder credited regular sauna sessions with helping her stay youthful at 67, showing how varied approaches can support long-term health.

The therapist’s recommendations focus on simple but effective changes. Regular movement, better sleep, a balanced diet, and stress reduction are all steps that can lower health risks. These measures also support the government’s push for healthier living to extend active years.
