State Forest Authority Counts 49 Forest Fires for 2025 - Thuringia's 2025 Wildfire Crisis Burns Over 85 Hectares of Forest
Thuringia faced one of its worst wildfire seasons in 2025, with 49 recorded blazes. The total area burned reached 85.7 hectares—an area larger than 120 soccer fields. Officials have since highlighted the severity of the damage and the challenges in preventing future incidents.
The year began with alarming figures as early as spring. April saw 10 fires, followed by 11 in May and 12 in July. August, by contrast, recorded just three blazes. The most destructive incident struck the Saalfeld Heights near Gösselsdorf, where around 82 hectares of forest were destroyed in a single fire.
Investigations into the causes revealed that 18% of the fires were set deliberately. Another 14% resulted from negligence, while just 1% was linked to a traffic accident. However, the origin of 65% of the blazes remained unknown. Drier conditions in 2025, compared to the previous year, also heightened the risk of wildfires spreading.
Historical data shows that only two years since 1995 had more fires: 2003, with 90 incidents, and 2022, with 70. The 2025 total of 49 marked a sharp increase from the 33 fires recorded in 2024. Despite the scale of the problem, no new prevention strategies have been publicly announced by the Thüringer Landesforstverwaltung.
The 2025 wildfires left 85.7 hectares of Thuringia's forests damaged, with arson and dry weather playing key roles. Authorities have yet to introduce specific measures to address the rising threat. The data underscores the need for stronger fire prevention and investigation efforts in the region.
