Thuringia's Parent-Child Center Expands Vital Support for Rural Families

Families in rural Thuringia often struggle to find local support services. In response, ThEKiZ Dermbach—a Parent-Child Center in Wartburgkreis—has expanded its offerings to fill the gap. Funded by the state's 'Solidarity in Family Life' program, the center provides accessible help for parents and children across the district.

ThEKiZ Dermbach officially became a Parent-Child Center in July 2023. It serves as a welcoming hub for all families, offering open meeting spaces and low-threshold services. The team focuses on empowering parents through themed evenings, courses, and counseling, including the 'Strong Parents, Strong Children' program.

One of the most popular services is an open playgroup for babies and toddlers from four months old. Since September 2025, midwives from the Rhön Birth Center have supported the sessions, providing professional guidance. First-aid courses for children also draw high demand, with most sessions free or very affordable.

The center emphasizes creative, intergenerational activities open to the entire community. These formats are particularly important in areas facing demographic decline. By fostering connections and early childhood support, ThEKiZ Dermbach aims to strengthen family life in the region.

Multiple ThEKiZ centers in Wartburgkreis work together under the state-funded LSZ program. Their collaboration ensures families receive consistent support, no matter where they live in the district.

ThEKiZ Dermbach now plays a key role in supporting young families in rural Thuringia. Through free or low-cost services, professional guidance, and community-focused activities, the center helps parents and children thrive. The state-backed initiative continues to expand, ensuring more families can access vital resources close to home.
