Top U.S. Hospitals Recognized for Exceptional Patient Safety in 2026 Rankings
Hundreds of U.S. hospitals have been recognised for outstanding patient safety in Healthgrades' 2026 rankings. The awards highlight facilities that excelled in preventing avoidable complications during patient stays. Nearly a third of this year's honorees are new, reflecting shifts in hospital performance nationwide.
Healthgrades named 438 hospitals across 40 states as the top 10% for patient safety. Among them, 250 ranked in the top 5%—many linked to major health systems. These hospitals outperformed peers by reducing risks of falls, catheter infections, pressure sores, and procedure-related lung collapses.
The impact of their performance is significant. If all hospitals matched these standards, over 100,000 safety incidents could have been avoided between 2022 and 2024. The rankings also revealed geographic disparities: no hospitals in 10 states or Washington, D.C., made the list, possibly due to rural care shortages. Five states stood out for their high numbers of award-winning facilities. Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania each had between 21 and 62 recognised hospitals. These large states led in minimising serious in-hospital complications, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
The 2026 awards show measurable progress in patient safety, with top-performing hospitals preventing thousands of avoidable harms. However, gaps remain in regions lacking access to high-quality care. The findings underscore the need for continued improvements in hospital practices across the country.
