Vienna's New Nursing Training Hub Aims to Combat Austria's Care Worker Shortage
Caritas has reopened its vocational training centre for nursing and care professions in Vienna. The facility, located on Seegasse in the Alsergrund district, follows major renovations. Its launch comes as Austria faces a growing shortage of skilled workers in social and healthcare roles The centre provides a variety of training options. These include vocational schools, practical courses, and continuing education in nursing and social care. The goal is to address the urgent need for qualified staff in the sector.
Caritas Director Klaus Schwertner highlighted the critical demand for workers. By 2030, Austria will need up to 75,000 additional care and support professionals, with 9,000 required in Vienna alone. He stressed that nursing training should hold the same prestige as economic professions. Schwertner also called for better recognition of social care roles. Improving the status of these jobs, he argued, would help attract and keep more talent in the field
The newly renovated centre aims to boost training opportunities for future care workers. With thousands of positions to fill in the coming years, the facility is part of a broader effort to tackle staff shortages. Caritas hopes the initiative will raise the profile of nursing and social care careers.
