Volunteers Ensure No Patient Faces Death Alone in US Hospitals

A quiet but meaningful movement is ensuring that no one faces their final moments alone. The No One Dies Alone program sends volunteers to sit with dying patients who have no family or friends nearby. Founded after a nurse witnessed a patient's lonely passing, the initiative now operates in hospitals and hospices across the US.

The idea began with Sandra Clarke, a nurse who stayed with a patient after he asked her not to leave. When he died alone shortly after, she decided to create a program to prevent such loneliness. Volunteers now fill that role, offering companionship when loved ones are absent.

Tammy Skubal is one of those volunteers. She sits with patients, holds their hands, and provides simple comforts like swabbing dry mouths or adjusting blankets. For her, being present in those last moments is a way to honour a life. Sam Cradduck, an expert from *Aging Untold*, trains volunteers for the program. He describes it as a vital service that eases the end-of-life experience for patients who might otherwise face it alone. Volunteers also help patients recognise the signs of passing, keeping them as comfortable as possible. Hospitals like Inova Fair Oaks in Virginia and PeaceHealth in Oregon have adopted the program. While no official count exists, similar initiatives are spreading across US healthcare facilities.

The program continues to grow, offering solace to patients who would otherwise die without anyone by their side. Volunteers like Skubal and trainers like Cradduck ensure that even in their final hours, people receive dignity and companionship. The effort remains rooted in a simple but powerful belief: no one should have to leave this world alone.
