Vitamin E remains a key nutrient for pets, supporting cell protection and overall health. New guidelines and ongoing research highlight its role in diets for dogs and cats. However, its benefits vary depending on the condition and dietary composition.

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in animals, shielding cells from damage caused by free radicals. It also works alongside other nutrients like vitamin C to strengthen this protective effect. But processing methods, such as extrusion or heat treatment, can reduce its potency, leading manufacturers to add extra amounts to meet minimum requirements.

Regulatory bodies set different standards for vitamin E in pet food. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) measures it in international units per kilogram of dry matter, accounting for higher needs in diets rich in unsaturated fats. Meanwhile, the National Research Council uses milligrams of α-tocopherol for its recommendations. The European Pet Food Industry Federation updated its 2024 guidelines, keeping vitamin E as an essential nutrient for all life stages. Studies show that increasing dietary vitamin E boosts circulating α-tocopherol levels and enhances antioxidant status, especially in diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Yet, its effects plateau at moderate inclusion rates, suggesting limited benefits beyond a certain point. While supplementation improved clinical signs in dogs with atopic dermatitis, results were inconsistent for dogs with osteoarthritis or cats with chronic kidney disease.

Vitamin E continues to play a vital role in pet nutrition, with updated guidelines reinforcing its importance. Its effectiveness depends on diet composition and health conditions, with clear benefits in some cases but mixed results in others. Manufacturers and pet owners must consider these factors when planning balanced diets.
