Wolfsburg Hospital Debuts AI-Powered Robot for Ultra-Precise Spine Surgery

Wolfsburg Municipal Hospital has introduced a cutting-edge surgical system for spine, orthopaedic, and trauma procedures. The new technology combines the Loop-X imaging robot with Curve navigation, aiming to improve precision and patient safety. The investment marks a significant step in the hospital's push for advanced medical care. The system will be used mainly in spine surgery, as well as in orthopaedic and trauma operations, particularly for pelvic procedures. Its key feature is the ability to place screws and implants with millimetre accuracy, minimising risks to nerves, blood vessels, and other delicate structures. The Loop-X robot provides real-time 2D and 3D scans, creating a detailed 3D map of the patient's anatomy during surgery.

The technology enables gentler, more precise procedures with smaller incisions, shorter operation times, and less blood loss. Radiation exposure is also reduced for patients, surgeons, and nursing staff. Additionally, the system's mobility allows it to be moved between operating rooms, making workflows more efficient.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Zweckberger, head of neurotrauma and spine surgery, called the Loop-X a milestone for minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Alexander Wegner, chief physician of trauma, orthopaedic, and hand surgery, added that real-time imaging cuts down on post-operative checks, speeding up recovery. Mayor Dennis Weilmann highlighted the city's nearly one-million-euro investment as part of its commitment to medical innovation.

Prof. Dr. Nils Homann, the hospital's medical director, reaffirmed the goal of delivering top-level care while strengthening Wolfsburg's role in research, training, and technological advancement. The new system is expected to enhance surgical outcomes by improving accuracy, reducing complications, and shortening recovery times. With this upgrade, Wolfsburg Municipal Hospital aims to solidify its position as a leader in modern medical treatment and innovation.
