Zurich City Hospital Unveils Cutting-Edge Spine Center for Complex Disorders

Zurich City Hospital has launched a new Spine Center to improve care for patients with spinal disorders. The facility brings together specialists from neurosurgery, orthopaedics, rheumatology, neurology, radiology, and pain management. Its goal is to provide more integrated and patient-focused treatment for complex conditions.

The centre is led by PD Dr. Daniel Coluccia, who serves as both head of the Spine Center and chief physician of neurosurgery and spinal surgery at the hospital. Under his direction, the team aims to address the often-multifaceted causes of spinal disorders through coordinated expertise.

A key feature of the Spine Center is its Spine Board—an interdisciplinary panel that reviews challenging cases and decides on the best treatment approach. This model ensures closer collaboration among specialists, reducing fragmented care for patients with complicated conditions. Currently, only a handful of Swiss hospitals, including Zurich's Schulthess Klinik and Geneva's Hirslanden Spine Center, offer a similar interdisciplinary setup with a fixed Spine Board. The new facility strengthens Zurich City Hospital's commitment to advanced, team-based medicine for spinal health.

The Spine Center's structured approach aims to streamline diagnosis and treatment for complex spinal disorders. By combining multiple specialties under one system, the hospital expects to improve outcomes for patients with challenging conditions. The initiative reflects a growing trend toward more coordinated and specialised spinal care in Switzerland.
