Zurich Zoo euthanizes 10 healthy macaques due to overcrowding concerns

Zurich Zoo has culled ten healthy djelada macaques from its colony. The decision came after the group grew too large for its enclosure. Officials stated the measure was needed to protect the long-term health of the remaining animals.

The zoo's djelada population had reached 48 before the culling took place. With limited space and no option to relocate the monkeys within Europe, authorities decided to reduce the group. The ten animals were euthanised on March 9, 2026.

After the cull, 38 macaques remain in the enclosure. The zoo confirmed that the bodies of the euthanised monkeys were donated for scientific research.

Officials explained that overcrowding risked the wellbeing of the entire group. They stressed that the decision was made to ensure sustainable conditions for the colony.

The zoo now houses 38 djelada macaques following the cull. The action was taken to address space constraints and maintain the health of the remaining animals. The bodies of the euthanised monkeys have been provided to researchers for further study.
