'Legendary Victory' Exhibition Honors 80 Years of the Iconic Pobeda Car

A new exhibition celebrating the 80th anniversary of the GAZ-M20 Pobeda car has opened at the Technical Museum. Launched on May 7, 2023, the display honours one of the Soviet Union’s most iconic vehicles. The Pobeda became a symbol of postwar recovery and a landmark in Soviet engineering. The GAZ-M20 Pobeda was first designed in 1943, even as the war continued. Engineers at the Gorky Automobile Plant envisioned a car for peaceful life after victory. Under the leadership of chief designer Andrei Lipgart, the project became a reality.

The Pobeda’s launch marked a major achievement for the plant. Lipgart later received the Stalin Prize for his work on the vehicle. Its sleek design and innovative features, like the chrome-plated radiator grille, set it apart.

The car quickly gained popularity across the Soviet Union and beyond. It became one of the first Soviet vehicles officially exported to foreign markets. Even today, some Pobedas remain on the roads, a testament to their durability.

The exhibition showcases original components, including the GAZ emblem and the 'Pobeda' nameplate. Visitors can explore documents, blueprints, and archival photographs tracing the car’s development from concept to production. The 'Legendary Victory' exhibition highlights the Pobeda’s role in Soviet history. Rare parts, historical records, and personal stories bring its legacy to life. The display runs as part of the 80th-anniversary celebrations of its mass production.
